Chronological index to pre-1907 registrations of birth [microform]. 1852-1907.

The Bureau of Health Statistics has produced an alphabetical statewide index to the pre-1907 birth registrations. The index lists the individual's name, date and county of birth, and a reel and document number where the entry can be located. The index also includes most of the entries found in the Delayed Registrations of Births. There are a number of problems with the index. Unnamed infants are sometimes entered at the beginning of the entries for their surname and sometimes entered under the father's name. The reel numbers shown on the index do not refer to the reel numbers assigned to the microfilm. However, they can be used as a locating device; either by using the finding aid or notes on microfilm boxes at ARC. Entries for Sheboygan and Walworth counties may give incorrect reel and document numbers. Incorrect county of birth has been given for all counties beginning with the letter "s". Therefore, all entries which list St. Croix as a county of birth are really Sauk; Sauk is really Sawyer; Sawyer is really Shawano; Shawano is really Sheboygan; and Sheboygan is really St. Croix. As with all indexes, researchers are cautioned to check variant spellings of names due to errors of transcription.
